American Games at the Oflag 64 Sportplatz

On September 22, 2018, Polish teams commemorated the activities enjoyed by Oflag 64 POWs behind the wire, by playing exhibition games of American football and baseball.

Nearby stood a compelling display of posters that had been created by students of a local school. The posters illustrated the students’ ideas of what life must have been like as POWs at the camps.

Following the football demonstration, U.S. Oflag 64 Family member, Dave Stewart, son of ex-POW Captain Donald Stewart, presented an American Medal of Honor football to the Polish football coach and his team (KS Bydgoszcz Archers), to thank them for their participation.

The U.S. delegation handed out commemorative Sportplatz challenge coins to the sports participants, students, and town officials. The coins and the unique football gift were arranged by Pat Waters, son of ex-POW Lt. Col. John K. Waters. Many Szubin citizens came out to enjoy the day’s events, demonstrating continued local enthusiasm for the creation of the Museum of POW Camps in Szubin.
